Grimoire

Grimoire

A copy of the parchment pinned to the wall — recording every gesture of the watch, Kaikoku.

Chapter IThe Cover — Hunter Case

Touch the watch, and the cover opens and closes in turn — a glint of the clasp as it opens, a soft settling click as it shuts.

Sweep sideways, and the hour is sealed in a flash of light.

Close the cover, and power begins to gather about it, filling over six seconds. Open it once full, and — "Thou shalt set the hour free" — a golden torrent bursts forth.

And to one who has opened the cover a hundred times — the decree descends: "Thou shalt spread word of me."

Chapter IIChain and Pendulum

The watch hangs from its chain and swings as a true pendulum.

Tilt your device, and the watch hangs toward the true "down." Shake it, and inertia swings the watch about; shake it hard, and momentum sends it spinning round and round.

The more it sways, the more the links of the chain rub and chime together, and a faint seven-colored aura wraps the watch. Swing it violently, and the heavy toll of the chain layers over the chiming.

But each time it passes over the top in a full rotation — the chain takes a wound, and a vermilion flash blinks twice. The deeper the wound, the deeper the vermilion.

Grip the edge and whirl it round and round about the chain — count twelve rotations, and magic manifests.

But at thirty-six — whirl it too far, and the chain snaps, and the watch vanishes into the void. Depending on the fated moment of its severing, the rite of resummoning imposes one of two trials — the Rite of Marks (sweep the screen in the order of the marks shown) or the Rite of Stars (trace a five-pointed star in a single stroke, in order from one, returning to the starting star). Err, and you begin anew. Even without the rite, it returns of its own accord after a single hour.

Leave it untouched for five minutes, and the watch begins quietly ticking the seconds like a pendulum clock.

Lay your device down for thirty-six seconds — the chain snaps, the watch falls, and upon the face the "Resting Scene" arises. A pocket watch wrapped in a magic circle opens its cover, and digital time stands alongside the calendar. Right your device, and it returns to its former state (this does not occur on iPad, for landscape is its natural resting form).

The scene bears the aspect of the heavens as well — the present sky and temperature appear (when location is permitted, via Apple Weather).

Chapter IIIThe Mystery of the Twelve Windings

Stroke the center of the face in a circle, and the winding begins.

Each full circle lights one diamond of the magic circle; twelve circles, and magic is unleashed.

Whether the cover is open or closed determines which magic is unleashed. Stay your hand for four seconds, and the winding dissipates.

Unleash it open, and Arcana by night, Solar Arts by day, shows itself before you in full form. Unleash it closed, and a "Seal" — a different art unto the cover itself, common to both day and night — manifests.

Chapter IVMagic of the Twelve Houses, and the Solar Arts and Seals

Magic numbers twelve — one dwelling in each house, arrayed after the houses of the months.

✶ Crag of the Stone Peak

Mountain peaks rise up from beneath your feet, snow glittering at their crowns as mist drifts across the ridges.

✶ Whirl of Blue Waves

Ripples spread beneath your feet, and spray arcs beneath gravity's pull.

✶ Bubbles of Twin Fish

Two opposing streams of bubbles swim about the watch, then burst into light.

✶ Crimson Blaze

Embers waver in three-dimensional depth and rise.

✶ Wedge of the Earth

The earth trembles as an amber wedge thrusts upward, and dust rises.

✶ Ring of the Gale

Streams of wind sweep around the watch fore and aft, and the pressure of the gale sets it swaying.

✶ Curtain of Moon Tide

A silver tide rises into a curtain, and a crescent moon quietly ascends.

✶ Purge of Dawn's Light

The dawn's light purifies the murk of time, and golden motes of light rise to the heavens.

✶ Purge of the White Ear

Platinum light, like ears of grain, spirals upward, purifying the space.

✶ Rewinding of Time

The hands race backward at speed, and a whirl of gold dust winds counterclockwise.

✶ Barrier of Violet Lightning

A violet-indigo flash raises a barrier, and a shockwave runs through.

✶ Storm of Constellations

The season's constellation blazes up, and its stars scatter to the four winds.

By day, the sun seals the Arcana away — in its place, six "Solar Arts" answer instead.

☀︎ Ring of the Sun

The sun spreads into a ring, its rays turning in stately procession.

☀︎ Wings of the Phoenix

Feathers of flame rise as twin wings, leaving embers in their wake.

☀︎ Veil of Heat Haze

Heat haze rises, and the scene wavers and shimmers.

☀︎ Wingbeat of the Phoenix

Great wings beat three times, and embers swirl and rise.

☀︎ Sunlight Through Leaves

Pools of sunlight filtering through leaves drift slowly, flickering.

☀︎ Squall of Gold Dust

Golden dust falls as a sudden shower, glittering, then fading.

Seals — arts unleashed by closing the cover. They act upon the cover itself, regardless of day or night.

◈ Great Seal Crest

A vast ring of sealing is stamped upon the cover, turning slowly with each impact.

◈ Ring of the Binding Chain

Golden chains bind the watch from every side, tightening, then bursting apart.

◈ Curtain of the Lunar Eclipse

A dark violet curtain eclipses the cover, a golden ring (corona) shining at its edge.

◈ Forbidden Spell of Thunder

Violet-white lightning strikes the cover from the heavens, scattering sparks below.

◈ Curtain of Falling Stars

A host of shooting stars falls in slanting streams, flickering out at the edge.

◈ Cage of Flame

Two opposing rings of flame close about the watch, caging it in.

The number of incantations cast for each spell (the Incantation Record) and the page of Achievements are inscribed only within thy own watch.

Chapter VAspects of Day and Night, and the Rite of the Veil

This watch shifts between its "Aspect of Day" and "Aspect of Night" according to the true sunrise and sunset (when location is not permitted, the hours from six to eighteen are deemed day).

By day — the ground turns pale rose, the face dyes ruby, and upon the cover the phoenix spreads its wings before the sun. By night — lapis, moon, and stars return once more.

Past sixteen hundred hours, violet-indigo dregs begin to fill from the edge of the face, reaching their peak at midnight.

At four in the morning, light descending from above purifies the murk.

Around sunset, the season's constellation rises in gold — Leo in spring, Scorpius in summer, Cassiopeia in autumn, Orion in winter.

Enable the "Rite of the Veil" in Arcana settings, then cover the sensor (proximity) at the top of the screen with your palm — and in that instant, even by day, the veil of night descends for five minutes. The screen sinks into darkness for a moment, then relights in its nightly form.

Just before dawn, the screen slowly whitens with the light of daybreak, reaching its peak at the moment of transition, then gradually returns to its former brightness.

Chapter VIThe Cover of the Twelve Houses

Upon the cover's deep lapis, the house of the month is engraved in gold.

By day, the cover turns to ruby, and the phoenix spreads its wings before the sun (PHOENIX).

The stars turn with depth, and now and then the figure of the house (a statue) rises into view, then fades.

In the Chamber of ZODIAC, you may examine the crests of all twelve months. By day, they are hazed by the light and hard to see.

At the top of the hour, when the minute hand points to twelve — the house matching that hour's number manifests upon the face, its stars joining into shape. In the Chamber of ZODIAC too, touch the crest to see the same manifestation.

Once the house's manifestation subsides, the chosen Arcana (by night) or Solar Art (by day) manifests in turn, of its own accord.

With the "Rite of Countenance" enabled, Face ID examines the watch's owner after the art is cast — if you are not the owner, the magic circle raises the invitation glyph (QR).

Chapter VIIMagic of Summoning

Speak to Siri, "Thou shalt Kaikoku," and the pocket watch answers. "Kaikoku" or "PocketChime" alone will also serve.

"Thou" and "the hour" are one in the old tongue — even to ask "What hour is it?" becomes an incantation of summoning.

If your words transform into some other spell (such as a timer), add "Open Kaikoku."

If you wish to summon it by other words, grant it that name within the Shortcuts app.

Chapter VIIIThe Sealed Hour — Alarm Bell

In the Chamber of the Alarm Bell, seal the hour that shall sound.

Set the time by grasping the pocket watch's hands directly. Turn the minute hand, and the hour hand follows in kind, with the feel of the crown answering each minute. Switch between hour and minute hands, and between morning and afternoon, with the marks below.

Choose the marks for days of the week for repetition (choose none, and it sounds but once). You may also set a label, a slumber (snooze, one to thirty minutes), and the sound of the bell.

In the list, a small glowing pocket watch marking the sealed hour appears on each row. Toggle it on and off with the mark, and lay it to rest with the mark of dust.

When the hour arrives, alongside the system's ringing, the app unleashes a great burst of gold — "The hour hath come." Choose snooze, and it sounds again after a grace period.

Chapter IXSands of Time — Timer

In the Chamber of the Timer, set the minutes and seconds — "Bury the hour in sand" — and the hourglass turns once as time begins to flow (while waiting, a touch will turn it too).

The sand falls, accelerating under gravity, bursting as it lands, and magic power leaks from the narrow waist. About it, a magic circle inscribed in Latin keeps turning.

The remaining time dwells upon the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island as well (Live Activity). You may pause and resume from there too.

Presets for one, three, five, and ten minutes are provided as well.

When time is full, the bell you have bound rings out — the Arcane Bell, the Great Belfry, the Music Box of Stars, the Arcane Sacred Bell (weighty), or the Hymn of Dawn (a bright hymn of praise).

The default, "Follow the Hour," chooses the Hymn of Dawn if the ringing hour falls by day, or the Arcane Sacred Bell if by night, of its own accord. Choose slumber (snooze), and it sounds again after a short while.

Chapter XThe Chamber of the Stopwatch — Stopwatch

In the Chamber of the Stopwatch, "Begin the count" — elapsed time is marked within the magic circle as the ring of seconds turns.

"Lap" records the passing moment (the interval between laps is noted as well). After "Stop" comes "Resume" or "Reset."

And as the count proceeds, the magic of the twelve houses manifests of its own accord, in order, every ten seconds.

Leave the chamber, and time still flows on. The cover closes of its own accord, and the stopwatch's face shows through upon it — the elapsed time, the ring of seconds, and the label all remain, and the magic every ten seconds does not cease.

All the while, the Stopwatch button on the Home screen glows ruby, showing it is running. Return to the Chamber of the Stopwatch to stop or lap.

Even away from the app, the stopwatch dwells upon the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island (Live Activity).

Chapter XIThe Hours of All Nations — World Clock

In the Chamber of the World, the hours of eight cities (Tokyo, London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, Dubai, Singapore) flow at once.

Each city bears a small glowing pocket watch marking its hour, alongside the time difference from your device and whether it is day (☀) or night (✦).

Chapter XIICasings and Arcana Settings

In the Chamber of Arcana, choose the watch's casing — Gold, the hunter case (deep lapis face with Roman numerals and spade hands), or Silver, the railroad watch (white face with Arabic numerals, baton hands, and a vermilion second hand).

The casing instantly redyes everything down to the chain, hourglass, magic circle, lettering, and widgets — and the coloring of already-set alarm bells changes too.

Enable "Crimson Emblem," and the app's emblem (icon) becomes the phoenix cover — its daytime guise (taking precedence over the Gold or Silver casing).

Choose a magic slot (for when the cover opens or closes), then touch the mark in the Chamber of Effects to try it out.

Change the casing, and the app's crest (icon) placed upon your Home Screen switches between gold and silver as well.

Arcana is the art of night — the sun itself seals the Arcana away (though changing casings and other rites may still be performed by day).

Enable "Sunrise and Sunset Notices," and a new verse arrives as a notice each day, at dawn and at dusk.

Enable "Prophecy for Thee," and the nearest engagement yet to come that day appears beneath the face, held by an amethyst clasp. Touch it to open your calendar; on days with nothing scheduled, nothing appears.

This hour dwells upon your Apple Watch as well — the face matches the main app (ruby by day, dregs and constellations by night). Touch it, or tap your fingers twice (Double Tap), and the cover opens and closes.

iPhone and Watch resonate as one — open the cover on one, and the other opens too, and the flash of the wrist rite calls forth the iPhone's spell. And when a spell is cast upon the iPhone, that same spell manifests upon your wrist as well, with a pulse (while both chambers are open).

The emblem (icon) on your wrist is fixed as the crimson phoenix — for watchOS permits no changing of emblems.

Turn your wrist, and each rotation marks a small pulse — twelve, and magic flashes forth; thirty-six, and the chain is severed — touch to perform the rite of resummoning.

Touch the widget's watch, and the cover opens and closes there upon the spot. Each hour on the hour, that hour's house manifests upon the face (the next-alarm widget opens the Chamber of the Alarm Bell).

Day and night upon your wrist and widget follow sunrise and sunset as inferred from your device's time zone (the main app follows the true sky, if location is permitted).

The Rite of the Veil is enabled in this chamber as well. Guidance to Siri's words and to Shortcuts is found here too.

Chapter XIIISmall Gestures

Tap the screen with two fingers, and all but the watch vanishes from sight. Tap again to return.

Tilt your device, and a brass sheen runs across the watch.

From the mark at the upper right, or from the end of this book, you may share this watch with a friend.

All effects heed the "Reduce Motion" setting and quietly diminish in kind.

Chapter — PactThe Pact of Liberation

For three days from when you first open the watch is the "Hour of Trial" — all Arcana lies unlocked.

Once the trial has run its course, the free allotment is thus — for Arcana, the Crimson Blaze and the Storm of Constellations; for Solar Arts, the Ring of the Sun; for Seals, the Great Seal Crest; for bells, the Arcane Bell; for casing, Gold.

Strike the "Lifetime Pact" (¥500), and all is unlocked for generations to come. Those who have passed beneath the invitation glyph (QR) find the price of the "Invitation Pact" (¥380) opened to them. A monthly "Monthly Pact" (¥100) exists as well.

An Offering of Incense is a scent of gratitude — unrelated to any feature, it simply sustains this watch's flame.

Chapter XIVThe Forbidden Spell

Beyond this point, a sacred mystery is recorded. Its name is —

(The rest has been torn away. The full text may be read only by one who has undergone the Rite of Countenance within the watch.)

When it is renewed,
the lost Arcana shall be restored.
